Despite a report that U.S. figure skater Evan Lysacek and U.S. gymnast Nastia Liukin are dating, a rep for the skater told Access Hollywood that he’s single.
People reported that Evan and Nastia, who first met in October 2008 while performing in NBC’s “Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular,” have been dating since last summer.
“We became good friends and have become really close since then,” Evan told the mag.
The duo reportedly got serious after attending the ESPYs together last July and then Evan reportedly traveled to Dallas in August to support Nastia at the U.S. Nationals.
But a rep for Evan says they are just friends.
“They’re close friends. Evan is single,” a rep fore the skater told Access on Monday. “They’ve attended some events together.”
Access Hollywood caught up with Nastia last week in Vancouver just before Evan clinched the gold medal – and the gymnast said she was pumped to see Evan, someone she referred to at the time as a “friend,” compete.
“I’m excited and nervous [for Evan],” she told Access at the time, adding, “As long as he skates well and does up to his best capabilities. And that’s the most important thing, to be happy with your performance, no matter what. If you do win a medal, no matter what color, as long as you enjoy the experience and just have fun out there.”
Nastia told People that it was amazing to watch Evan bring home gold in men’s figure skating – the first to do so in 22 years.
“To see his dreams come true was amazing,” Nastia explained. “Even though we’re not in the same sport, we got to connect at the same level because there’s nothing like the Olympics. It was nice to be on other side of things and be the support system, but I was nervous.”
And the figure skater couldn’t be happier to have the gymnast’s support.
“She been so helpful to me,” he told the mag. “She has been through it herself. If I’m having a bad day, she tells me to have faith and to keep going. Sometimes your support system has more faith in you than yourself. And when she tells me things are going to be fine, I really believe it.”
