Ashley Hamilton Talks Friendship With DJ AM: ‘He Helped Me Get Sober’

Ashley Hamilton has spoken out about his late friend DJ AM, AKA Adam Goldstein, who was found dead on Friday in New York City at the age of 36.

“He was an amazing man, I mean really, a phenomenal man,” Ashley, who will join “Dancing With the Stars” this season, told Access Hollywood. “We’d been friends for 15, 16 years.. and he really had that thing where he cared about people, genuinely cared to help people… and he helped a lot of people. It’s very sad.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, sources told Access that authorities found a crack pipe and a bag of the drug near DJ AM’s body after breaking the star’s door down, following a 911 call from one of his friends.

Prescription pills were also found in the apartment, sources told Access.

DJ AM had recently completed an MTV intervention-style reality series just three days before his death.

The coroner said autopsy tests were inconclusive and DJ AM’s cause of death has yet to be determined.

On Friday, however, police sources said they suspected an overdose was to blame.

Ashley, who has battled addiction himself and is now sober, revealed to Access he actually assisted DJ AM in the past with drug recovery.

“Adam was a very close friend of mine. I actually helped him get sober when he came in and then he helped me get sober when I went out and came back,” Ashley told Access. “We’ve been friends for a long, long time.”

The actor, who is gearing up for Season 9 of “Dancing With the Stars” alongside partner Edyta Slwinska, said DJ AM seemed fine last week when the two talked.

“I spoke to him Tuesday night, I was on the phone with him Tuesday night,” Ashley recounted. “He seemed fine. We were just talking about cars and things.”

While drugs may be at the center of DJ AM’s death, Ashley said he didn’t feel like his pal was slipping in recent weeks.

“No… He helped a lot of people and he helped me as well, and that, I’m grateful for,” Ashley noted.

DJ AM will be buried on Thursday, a source told Access.
