Ashton Kutcher said he Tweeted without having the full story about the controversial firing of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
“How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste,” the actor wrote in a Tweet that has since been deleted.
Kutcher’s Tweet came in the wake of the firing of Paterno, following an alleged child sex-abuse scandal involving the team’s former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Some are suggesting Paterno – one of the most successful coaches in college football history – failed to adequately address the matter when he was first made aware of the alleged abuse.
After receiving a flood of angry messages, Kutcher explained his misstep.
“Heard Joe was fired, fully recant previous tweet!” he wrote in another Tweet, which has also since been deleted. “Didn’t have full story.”
The actor then posted, “As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case.”
Adding, “As of immediately I will stop tweeting until I find a way to properly manage this feed. I feel awful about this error. Won’t happen again.”
