Ashton Rules The Box Office

Los Angeles (October 2, 2006) — Ashton Kutcher is anything but the box office punk. His movies open one and two for the weekend. The animated “Open Season,” featuring the voices of Kutcher and Martin Lawrence, debuts in the top spot, with 23 (m) million dollars.

Number-two is “The Guardian,” featuring Kutcher with Kevin Costner as Coast Guard rescue swimmers. Last week’s top movie, “Jackass Number Two,” falls to third place. The Billy Bob Thornton-Jon Heder comedy “School for Scoundrels” opens in fourth, followed by “Jet Li’s Fearless.” Overall it was a good weekend for Hollywood. Most of September had been slow for the studios. But this weekend the box office take was up 13 percent over the same weekend last year.
