Beauty And The Beast’s Sendhil Ramamurthy Talks Gabe’s Beastly Secret

Sendhil Ramamurthy has been playing an aggressive assistant district attorney on The CW’s “Beauty and The Beast,” but his character is about to get very wild, beginning in tonight’s episode.

“[In] the next episode, you will see full blown Gabe Beast, as I’m known on set,” Sendhil told AccessHollywood.com down the phone line from New York City on Wednesday. “You’ll see Gabe Beast and Vincent Beast over the next couple of episodes.”

Playing the mutant human with a beastly side is a challenging role, and it’s one that Sendhil actually first found out about after hitting the show’s Canada set.

“They literally called me up and they were like, ‘Here’s the situation: we’d like for you to play this part and it’s an ADA.’ I said, ’Great, I can do lawyer. I’ve done lawyer before, I’ll do lawyer again,’ and I didn’t know until the second day of being on set — Kristin [Kreuk] just kind of let it slip inadvertently.

“The whole cast knew – everybody knew,” Sendhil continued, with a laugh. “She’s like, ‘So when Gabe Beast comes into the picture…’ I was like, ‘Gabe? Who? What? What did you just say?’ and she’s like, ‘Yeah, they’re making you a beast.’”

In Thursday night’s episode, airing at 9/8c on The CW, Gabe Beast comes crosses paths with J.T., Vincent’s best friend. Tackling the physicality of the Beast for the scene was something different for Sendhil, and after going full steam for the shoot, it left him – and his voice – a little worse for wear.

“Actually, for the viewers [to note], my first day as The Beast is in the next episode. … [It] was the scene with Austin Basis’ character – with J.T. — and I just went for it, and two hours in I was totally wiped out,” Sendhil told Access. “You can tell, by the end of the scene, my voice is going. That’s not like, Beast effects that they put on afterward, that’s actually what I sound like ‘cause I was just growling and just jumping. I went for it. People were telling me, ‘You gotta pace yourself.’… I really should have paced myself because I was crushed by the end. … I learned my lesson on that first day.”

Catherine and J.T. are protected from harm at the hands (or claws) of Vincent Beast because he cares for them and has somewhat of an ability to control his reactions. But, Gabe doesn’t share those feelings for the pair, and even if he did, Sendhil suggested that everyone needs to look out when his character transforms.

“Everybody should be worried about Gabe Beast,” he said.

The problem? Gabe, who was experimented on as a child – at least until he was saved by Catherine’s mom and adopted by a family – is an early version of Muirfield’s mutation project.

“Gabe Beast is like [version] 1.0 and Vincent Beast is 2.0 or 3.0, so Gabe Beast is way more unstable than Vincent Beast. Gabe Beast has been experimented on since he was a child,” Sendhil explained. “We’ve seen the shortcomings in Muirfield and what they created with Vincent and the problems that he has. So imagine how much less they knew when they were experimenting on Gabe. They really didn’t have any idea what they were doing and it shows.

“So when you ask, ‘Should Catherine trust Gabe Beast?’ No, she shouldn’t and neither should anybody else, including Gabe. Like Gabe doesn’t know what Gabe Beast does, he has no idea,” Sendhil said.

“Beauty and The Beast” airs tonight at 9/8c on The CW.
