Bethenny Frankel Defends Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

Following criticism in the press about her weight loss following her pregnancy, “The Real Housewives of New York City” star Bethenny Frankel is battling back – and even weighed herself in the Access Hollywood office.

“Do I think it’s an unrealistic message to be sending? If I gained 80 lbs. and expect to come back, that’s unrealistic. But the truth is I’m healthy before, during and after,” the new mom, who weighed 117 lbs. before her pregnancy and tipped the scales at 122.5 lbs on the Access scale on Thursday, said when asked about dropping her pregnancy weight.

Three weeks removed from giving birth, the reality star had lost 29 of the 35 pounds she gained during her pregnancy.

“The last day I started de-swelling and I pulled up my shirt and I said, ‘It’s not that bad.’ I said, “Jason this is not that bad,’” she explained, recalling her time in the hospital following the birth of daughter Bryn three weeks ago. “I think when I left the hospital, I had probably lost around 25 lbs.”

Dr. Svetlana Kogan – who has not treated Bethenny – told Access on Thursday that her slim down seemed appropriate and that she gained a normal pregnancy weight.

“It is a safe weight loss depending on what your lifestyle is,” Dr. Kogan explained. “Bethenny Frankel represents an average working breastfeeding woman.”

The reality star, who has written two best-selling books, “Naturally Thin” and “The Skinnygirl Dish,” addressed questions of whether she restricted herself during pregnancy.

“I didn’t diet when I was pregnant, but I also didn’t binge,” she told Access. “My theory is people who gain 60 to 70 pounds… you’re eating, you’re eating like a maniac! I think it’s license to go off the rails.”

When she wasn’t feeling tired, Bethenny said she practiced yoga and walked a lot in New York City with husband Jason.

“I ate healthy and I did eat sweets,” she said. “I do love to indulge a little, I ate whatever I wanted, but not like a crazy person.”

Bravo’s Andy Cohen, the Executive Producer of her new Bravo reality show — “Bethenny Getting Married?” (which debuts June 10 on Bravo) — also weighed in on her weight loss, telling Access, “Bethenny is a healthy, healthy lady, so whatever she’s done I’m sure she’s done it the right way. She’s a driven woman, she has a fitness video out if she’s not going to lose the weight, I don’t know who is!”
