Despite taking heat for her new single, “Bow Down” (which some critics have deemed belittling to women), Beyonce says she strives to support female empowerment.
“I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality,” the 31-year-old superstar told British Vogue in an interview for their May issue, adding that she believes there is a long “way to go” before equality for women is achieved.
“It’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept,” she added.
The “Run the World” singer also received flak for naming her upcoming world tour the “Mrs. Carter Show” after her husband, Jay-Z (Shawn Carter), but said the title is more about embracing the newfound empowerment she experienced after giving birth to their first child, Blue Ivy.
“I feel like Mrs. Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been,” she explained. “It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do’. The purpose of my body became completely different.”
Beyonce will kick off the “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” on April 15 in Serbia and finish on August 3 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
