Billy’s Blog: ‘Bee’ Musings: (June 2, 2006)

Shame me for my Jingoism. I watched the Scripps National Spelling Bee last night and as it narrowed down, I found myself rooting for America.

The lovely Finola Hackett, 2-time Canadian national champion was outstanding but Canadian. I love Canadians and frankly they’ve been nothing but great to me and Access Hollywood — we are a very highly rated show throughout Canada — but I found myself caught up in American pride. These are 13 & 14-year-old girls!!! I am embarrassed to admit this.

Finola went on a run where many of her words in the last rounds were of French origin or derived from French and I yelled, “No fair!”

“No fair?” My daughters yell that when one gets to hold our kitten longer than the other.

Katharine Close from Spring Lake, NJ won the whole thing. I am happy for her and embarrassed for myself.

“Ursprache” was the final word. Holy cow! Every young person up there gets my respect and is a winner.
