Billy’s Blog: ‘Idol’ Finale (May 23, 2006)

I begin this blog at 5:15 pacific time. Taylor Hicks just finished an explosive first round; he wasn’t just “Living for the City”, he just sold me on the fact he’ll soon be singing for living.

Ricky Martin is a good singer but a top notch entertainer. That’s Taylor Hicks and he lit this room on fire the moment his big grin and purple velvet jacket hit the screen.  In the words of Randy…”It was hot”.

Nancy will rejoice when she reads this…she’s said it all along.

I am sitting in the 7th row in the middle of the house and….wait!!!! McPhee has begun “Rainbow” and I’m floored. She is mesmerizing.  My daughters are entranced like they’ve just seen their first snowfall….Their joy and innocent awe is my fuel. My wife looks so beautiful. I’m in the middle of a great family moment…you, a great family show.

That’s the point for me. At 34, I’m already sentimental.  When Taylor sings, I look at his dad.  Same with Katharine’s dad when his little girl goes for it.  It makes me proud for them, of them, with them.

Small note for the fly on the wall folks:  at 5:40, the judges came scrambling back into the room from the commercial break.  Paula cut it the closest, holding onto her top and, to be truthful, was coming out of it, just a hair.  Still a family show…

Right now, at 5:53, taylor is bringing it home and the choir has come out behind him and its clear to me they like backing him up a whole lot more.  Hicks is going to run away with this thing because it isn’t enough to sing beautifully…You MUST ENTERTAIN.

And now, Daniel Powter…I change my mind, he’ll win.
