Billy’s Blog: Ready For Takeoff (September 5, 2006)

Just returning from the long Labor Day weekend in Utah and I have noticed a major change in airport activity.

The security lines are longer, yet more efficient. A month ago it seemed there were still people who looked shocked over having to remove their shoes for screening. Many had personal items that were in disarray. Now, the shoes are all off and ready, the beverages were dumped and the bags neatly arranged. One by one people filed through in an orderly way.

Once inside the departure terminal, the customary long lines in the food court, and most noticeably, Starbucks were bare. I couldn’t believe it and five minutes later my wife and I had our non-fat lattes and we were off to the gate. Five minutes after that, we were there and the plane was boarding. Two minutes after that were dumping our barely touched lattes into the garbage…no liquids allowed.

It’s going to take a lot for people to feel badly for the economic hit Starbucks is going to take over this anti-liquid regulation, but they’re feeling badly for themselves I bet.

Every paper on board the plane has an article about the new launch of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. She says in the promos we’re going to ‘make sense of our new world together’ (non verbatim). I suggest a story on caffeine deprived business travelers and the impact it has on them and the coffee giant.

On another note, Tom Cruise went to Brooke Shields’ house last week to apologize for the comments he made about her in regards to her use of Paxil to battle postpartum depression. It’s daunting to think, had I never asked Tom to defend his views in light of his friend Brooke’s decision to take the drug, none of that would ever have happened. When things stick in the media, it’s astounding the impact it can have.

My personal thought is that Tom is a good guy and people will forgive….as for the Starbucks depriving TSA, the jury is still out.
