Can Lindsay Lohan Scam Her SCRAM Device?

Following her probation hearing on Monday, Lindsay Lohan was fitted with a brand new accessory – her SCRAM ankle bracelet.

The eight-ounce device will monitor her alcohol intake – and even one drop could be trouble since Judge Marsha Revel ordered her to lay off alcohol completely.

So how exactly does the SCRAM work? Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos spoke with a spokesperson for the device to find out.

“SCRAM stands for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor,” AJ Gigler, a national SCRAM sales manager, explained. “It’s basically like a breathalyzer for the leg.”

Gigler went on to explain that the ankle bracelet draws a sample of perspiration from its subject’s leg every half hour. The sample is then immediately analyzed for alcohol and the results are transmitted to a database.

“How much alcohol do you have to consume for it to read [it] or let you know that someone has [drank]?” Maria asked.

“Typically, a beer to two beers within an hour can be picked up by the SCRAM device,” Gigler said.

It’s also difficult to trick or tamper with the device, as any obstruction would also be recorded, including placing material between the SCRAM and the ankle, submerging it in water or its removal altogether.

“Is there anything that someone like Lindsay can do to set this off by accident?” Maria asked.

“We’ve had a number of cases where people tried to bring up excuses – from ingesting certain types of food, mouthwash for example,” Gigler revealed. “Somebody would have to drink close to three full bottles of mouthwash to get the impact from just having two glasses of beer.”

As it turns out, Lindsay is no stranger to the SCRAM system. In 2007, she voluntarily wore the device as a good faith sign of sobriety after leaving rehab.
