Carrie Coon: ‘There’s A Great Lightness About’ Nora In ‘The Leftovers’ Season 2

Nora Durst was ready to say goodbye to Kevin Garvey and Mapleton, NY in “The Leftovers” Season 1 finale before she found a bundle of joy on his porch.

As trailers for “The Leftovers” Season 2 have revealed, Carrie Coon’s character has formed a new family as Season 2 begins – with Kevin (Justin Theroux), his daughter Jill (Margaret Qualley) and the precious little one on the porch, Lily (who was left there by Kevin’s son, Tommy).

“At the top of Season 2 we see that Nora really has embraced this role. She’s taking on being a mother again, and it’s – it has given her a renewed sense of purpose and there’s a great lightness about her in the way she’s dressing, in the way she’s moving around the world, and that’s been fun to play because, of course, that wasn’t a very big part of Nora when we meet her in Season 1,” Carrie told Access Hollywood at “The Leftovers” junket in Los Angeles.

“So that’s been great, but there’s also this tension in her because when her family disappeared in Season 1, so did all of her obligations and responsibilities, and so there’s this – she was about to leave, and she never tells Kevin that she was going to leave before she found Lily, so what I love about Nora, is that in Season 2, there’s still that tension in her of — she’s put on this role again of wife and mother, but there was always this possibility of freedom too and I think that’s still kind of rumbling around inside of her,” Carrie added.

Season 2 will find Nora and her newly formed family (Kevin and Nora are not married – it’s still early days), seeking a new start in a new town – Jarden, Texas, which has been dubbed “Miracle,” because when The Sudden Departure happened, no one from the town disappeared. It will also find Nora spending more time with Kevin’s daughter, Jill (Margaret Qualley), who is still struggling to deal with being abandoned by her mother, Laurie Garvey (Amy Brenneman), and her mom’s association with the Guilty Remnant.

“[Nora’s] sort of pseudo-stepmom, and you know, Nora’s cool. She’s kind of a cool pseudo-stepmom. She’s got some interesting boundaries to work around,” Carrie said. “Obviously Jill is pretty traumatized by her relationship with her real mom, and [Kevin and Nora are] not married, and Kevin is sort of in charge of his daughter and she has to sort of tiptoe in and out of those boundaries a little bit. But their relationship is fun and it’s been great working with Margaret because we didn’t get a lot of scenes together last year.”

And speaking of Laurie Garvey, could her all-white-wearing, chain-smoking group, the Guilty Remnant, return?

“If you look at who’s still on our show, you might get some clues about that,” Carrie said. “I won’t give away what happens, but maybe they’re not entirely gone.”

Beyond catching up with Kevin, Nora and Jill, Season 2 of “The Leftovers” will introduce a new family in Jarden/Miracle — the Murphys: Erika (played by Emmy-winner Regina King), husband John (Kevin Carroll) and their two children. Kevin and Nora move in next door.

“From the outside, they seem to be very put together, and they seem to have a very happy loving family and they seem to be very welcoming to us, but again, there’s that little voice inside of Nora that’s pretty perceptive and the voice is saying, ‘Everything is not as it appears, and don’t feel too comfortable,” Carrie said.

“The Leftovers” returns Sunday, October 4 at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
