Good news for Carrie Underwood – she’s about to save a whole lot of money on international calls!
Carrie’s professional hockey player hubby, Mike Fisher, was traded on Thursday from the Ottawa Senators to the Nashville Predators – nice and close to where Carrie currently lives in Tennessee!
Mike has been a star player for the NHL’s Senators since they drafted him in 1998. Originally from the small town of Checotah, Oklahoma, Carrie moved near Nashville following her “American Idol” win in 2005.
“We will both truly miss Ottawa. Mike has been such a big part of the community, and I will never forget how they welcomed me with open arms,” Carrie said in a statement to Access Hollywood on Thursday. “We obviously love Nashville, and the teams’ decision for him to now play with the Predators is an exciting opportunity for Mike. I support him wherever he plays!”
Mike and “Idol” champ-turned-country superstar Carrie tied the knot in a secret ceremony in July 2010, after announcing their engagement in December 2009. The two began dating in 2008 after meeting at one of Carrie’s concerts in Ottawa.
A few months after their nuptials, Carrie told Access Hollywood that because of the distance between the two lovebirds – with him constantly on the road during the hockey season and her spending so much time working in Nashville – it felt more like they were still just dating.
“Everyone always asks, ‘Do you feel any different?’ and I don’t,” Carrie said in September 2010, of life after saying, “I do.” “He’s in Ottawa working right now, and I’m working, so it feels a lot like dating.”
While long-distance relationships can be challenging, the singer told Access that a little space sometimes has its benefits.
“It’s kind of nice because I get to miss him and I get excited to see him,” she said at the time.
In 675 regular season games with Ottawa, Mike tallied 167 goals and 181 assists. He was also a finalist for the Selke Trophy in 2006, which honors the league’s top defensive forward.
For those keeping score at home, the Canadian-born Mike, 30, was traded to Nashville for two draft picks, according to ESPN.
