Diane Lane is getting ready to go “up, up and away” in the Zack Snyder-directed “Superman” franchise reboot.

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that the Oscar-nominated actress would play Martha Kent, human mother to Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” director Snyder said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

The Man of Steel’s leading lady and father have yet to be announced.

Superman’s next big screen adventure is targeting a December 2012 release.

In more superhero casting news, “Wonder Woman” appears to have landed someone evil enough to face off against Adrianne Palicki in David E. Kelley’s new NBC pilot.

Elizabeth Hurley broke the casting news on Twitter on Thursday morning.

“Thrilled to be doing the NBC pilot Wonder Woman,” the British actress wrote. “I’ll be playing the evil villain. Can’t wait.”

A rep for Warner. Bros. told Access Hollywood that the actress is expected to play the role, but added that the deal is not yet completely finished. The rep confirmed that Elizabeth is expected to star in the pilot, but had no further details as this time.
