Channing Tatum Wants To Play Gambit In X-Men: I’ve Got A Great ‘Cajun Accent’

Channing Tatum has his sights set on a superhero role.

The “White House Down” star hopes to someday play Gambit, the card-throwing mutant from Marvel’s “X-Men.”

“Gambit’s my favorite, ‘cause I’m from New Orleans — or around that area, my dad’s from New Orleans,” the 33-year-old actor told Total Film, adding that familiarity with Louisiana gives him an edge when it comes to Gambit’s drawl.

The actor said his desire to play Gambit is in no way an insult to Taylor Kitsch’s version of the mutant in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

“No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people,” he said.

“Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking [guy],” he added. “He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”

Should his dream become a reality, finding time to shoot a film as Gambit might be the most difficult issue for the actor, as he currently has two films in post-production (“The Lego Movie,” “Foxcatcher”). He is also filming “Jupiter Ascending” with Mila Kunis, and is about to start shooting his “21 Jump Street” sequel, “22 Jump Street” with Jonah Hill.

Channing also just became a father – wife Jenna Dewan Tatum gave birth to their daughter, Everly, on May 31.

VOTE: Would Channing make a good Gambit?
