Cheers & Jeers From The MTV VMAs

NEW YORK (September 1, 2006) — The MTV Video Music Awards returned to New York City on Thursday and Access Hollywood was there to capture the excitement every step of the way.

From the red carpet to backstage with the winners, the night was filled with kissing couples, baby news and never-before-seen backstage moments.

“It’s always good to be back in New York,” Nick Lachey told us on the red carpet.

A 60s glammed out Jennifer Lopez arrived with Marc Anthony, but J. Lo was mum on making any baby announcements, putting an end to the rumors she is expecting.

Are you listening Jesse McCartney?

But one star who was happy to talk about baby news was Diddy.

“Congratulations on the baby!” Access Hollywood fashion correspondent Stacy London told Diddy. “Do you want a cigar?”

“Thank. I’ll take one,” Diddy obliged.

And brand new couples were also making themselves noticed, as James Blunt and Petra Nemcova took in the VMAs together, even sharing a kiss when James won his VMA.

“We have to talk about your beautiful girlfriend. How’s it all going?” Access’ Tim Vincent asked James.

“Well she turned up so it must be a good sign,” James smiled.

“This is a very big public thing to bring a boyfriend to,” Tim told Petra.

“Well, we just said let’s go together so it’s very casual,” Petra revealed.

Speaking of casual, a casually-dressed Nick Lachey arrived solo ? about 20 minutes before Jessica, who showed off a new sleek, short bob cut.

The divorced couple nearly collided Thursday at a pre-VMA shopping Style Villa where Jessica ended up winning a car ? the same one that Nick lost.

“You didn’t win the car today,” Tim said to Nick.

“No I didn’t. Who did?” Nick asked.

“I think Jessica did,” Tim said somewhat hesitantly.

“Oh that’s good. Congratulations,” Nick said. “She always wanted a Chrysler.”Inside the show, a sharp-dressed Justin Timberlake kicked things off with some Michael Jackson-esque moves, which brought the house down.

JT shared the love for fellow performers OK Go, who stole the show when they pulled off a flawless rendition of their Internet renowned treadmill routine.

“Justin actually came up to us right before we went on and said he was a big fan,” the guys from OK Go told Access. “Then we saw him do this thing. When he gets going, man! He is a dance. We’re just dudes on treadmills.”

And it was a special occasion for Beyonce, who rocked the house in a trench coat and sexy black boots performing her single “Ring The Alarm.” She also took home the award for Best R&B video ? and that’s not all.

Beyonce is also celebrating her 25th birthday.

“What do you have planned for your birthday weekend?” Tim asked her.

“Tomorrow I go to Japan early in the morning. Then I’ll have a big birthday party on my actually birthday and then I come back and celebrate with ‘TRL’ and then I have another little dinner where my mom is going to cook. I actually have a party go to right now, and I’m speaking to you and I’m supposed to be at the party, but I don’t mind talking to you instead,” she smiled.

Then it was off to boyfriend Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in NYC ? where Access was waiting.

“I heard Kelly and Michelle are here and I know my sister is here so I feel good,” Beyonce told us as she made her way into the party.

And while Beyonce was a hit, it appeared the VMA crowd wasn’t thrilled with Britney Spears and Kevin Federline’s appearance via satellite at the awards where they did a skit before presenting their award.

As they appeared on screen, boos could be heard echoing throughout Radio City Music Hall.

Ouch.
