Chelsea Kane’s High School Play Nightmare: ‘They Literally Threw Change At Us!’

Chelsea Kane has a new film for ABC Family – “Lovestruck: The Musical” — and she’s glad that musicals are being celebrated in popular culture.

“I personally couldn’t be more thrilled that the musical movies and TV shows [are so popular],” the former “Dancing with the Stars” contender told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman. “It suddenly made being a thespian cool, because when I was in high school doing theater, we were having quarters thrown at us by the football team.

“It was not cool,” she continued. “It was tough to defend your theater background in school. So the fact that this is becoming the new cool craze is really nice. I’m glad it’s come around.

Chelsea said she still has memories of coins flying her way on stage.

“I was in a high school production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ and it was the most terrifying experience of my life. They literally threw change at us,” she said.

The actress stars in “Lovestruck: The Musical,” this Sunday on ABC Family, playing Harper, a woman who drinks an elixir and has 30 years taken off her age. While in the younger body, she tries to thwart her daughter’s impending marriage.

“’Dancing with the Stars’ was a huge leg up on the competition as far as getting this role,” Chelsea said of landing the part.

But it also required her to sing – something she wasn’t sure she could do on film until she hit the recording studio.

“Luckily I was able to carry a tune,” she said.
