Cher, Prince, Aretha Inspired ‘Dreamgirls’ Wardrobe

In “Dreamgirls,” does Beyonce’s character remind you of Cher?

Or do Eddie Murphy’s outfits remind you of Prince and Marvin Gaye?

Sharen Davis, the costume designer for “Dreamgirls,” says she channeled Cher to create Beyonce’s wardrobe and looked to Aretha Franklin for Jennifer Hudson’s styles.

Murphy’s outfits were modeled on clothes worn by Prince and Marvin Gaye.

Davis also came up with the drab, down-and-out suits Will Smith wears in his number one movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.” And she did them both at the same time, no less.

She says she limited Smith’s costumes to “four suits, eight shirts, six ties.”
