Chris Brown: I Don’t Remember Assaulting Rihanna

In Chris Brown’s first interview since the February 8 incident where he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna, the 20-year-old singer claims to have no memory of the events that got him five years of probation.

In a preview clip of the interview (slated to air on September 2) and posted on CNN.com, Brown, seated next to his mother Joyce Hawkins, told Larry King on CNN’s “Larry King Live” that he’s still in “shock” over the incident with Rihanna.

“I gotta just look at it like, ‘Wow,’ I’m in shock,” Brown said when asked about the assault. “First of all, it’s not who I am as a person. And that’s not who I promised everyone of being. When I look at the police reports or I hear the police reports, I don’t know what to think.”

Larry asked, “Do you remember doing it?”

“No,” Brown replied.

“You don’t remember doing it?” Larry pressed.

Brown’s mother, Joyce Hawkins, and attorney Mark Geragos appear alongside Brown during the hour-long talk. The singer’s mother said when she learned about the assault, she was also left in a state of disbelief.

“He came and he actually spoke to me about what happened,” she said. “And I was totally shocked, totally upset about the situation.

Hawkins told Larry that her son had never exhibited violent behavior prior.

“Chris has never ever been a violent person… even in high school,” she said.

“Never?” Larry asked.

“Never.” Hawkins said.

Brown said growing up with an alleged abusive stepfather led him to not know how to control his emotions and anger.

“I used to be scared to go to bed,” the pop star said, but added that his past is not an excuse for the assault.

Though Brown has not seen Rihanna – and has been order stay away from her for five years, Hawkins has been in contact with the young star.

“I let her know that I was very, very baffled, what had happened and apologized for my son, along with I’m so sorry what happened to you,” Hawkins said. “And I didn’t know what — I didn’t know what else to say, and I gave her a hug and she hugged me as well.”

Despite everything, Brown says he still loves Rihanna.

“I never fell out of love with her. That just wouldn’t go away,” he said.

Brown added that the thought of not seeing Rihanna for the next five years is daunting, but a reality.

“I definitely would be affected by it, but at the end of the day, I mean, we’re not together, so if she’s happy, I’m cool,” the singer said.

Brown was sentenced to five years probation, 180 days of community labor and 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling for assaulting the “Take A Bow” singer. He has also been order to not have any contact with Rihanna for the entire five years of his probation.
