Chris Evans On Playing ‘Captain America’: ‘Gonna Be The Worst Thing That Ever Happened To Marvel’

The search for the star of “The First Avenger: Captain America” took a while – and Chris Evans isn’t so sure he was the right pick to don the red, white and blue spandex.

“Gonna be the worst thing that ever happened to Marvel,” he joked to Access Hollywood on Saturday at the junket for his latest film, “The Losers” – another comic book adaptation, from rival DC’s Vertigo line.

Chris provides the comic relief in “The Losers,” a shoot-‘em-up tale of U.S. Special Forces fighters who have to face off against an egomaniacal villain to clear their names after finding themselves betrayed. It’s a role not dissimilar from his wise-cracking ways as Johnny Storm — another iconic Marvel hero — in the “Fantastic Four” films. In “The Losers,” though, he didn’t have to wear a skintight costume.

“I’ve been down that road, hopefully it won’t be too different,” he said of wearing Captain America’s famous outfit, adding that he does plan to bulk up for the role.

“I lost a little bit of weight the last project I had… I’ll probably hit the gym again,” he said.

Among the film’s other roles, Sebastian Stan has been cast as his sidekick, Bucky Barnes, but Chris is still waiting on his leading lady. “She’s Out of My League’s” Alice Eve has been one rumored name, but the star said he hasn’t heard anything official.

“I have no idea, that’s completely out of my hands,” he said.

“The Losers” is due in theaters April 23, with “Captain America” planned for 2011.
