Comic-Book Hero Captain America Dies

Captain America can’t save the day today.

The New York Daily News reports the superhero is killed in the issue of his comic book that hits newsstands today. The newspaper says the stars-and-stripes-wearing hero is gunned down by a sniper as he leaves a courthouse.

His downfall ends a long run. Captain America was created in 1941 to embody patriotic feeling during World War Two. And over the years, an estimated 210 (m) million copies of `Captain America” comic books have been sold in 75 countries.

Captain America Comics #1, Timely Comics, March 1941. The debut of Captain America. Art by Jack Kirby.

His demise is a blow to one of the men who created him. Ninety-three-year-old Joe Simon says, “We really need him now.”

And he could be back at some point. Marvel Entertainment, the publisher of the comic book, says a resurrection isn’t impossible.

The company has said it’s developing a Captain America movie.
