Dan Rather Donates $2 Million To Alma Mater

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (September 6, 2006) — On the same day Katie Couric stepped in as his successor to take over the “CBS Evening News,” former anchor Dan Rather has donated $2 million to his alma mater.

The $2 millionr gift from Rather is the largest in the history of Sam Houston State University. It’s in Huntsville, Texas, about 75 miles north of Houston.

In a statement released by the school, Rather said he “wanted to give back” to the many people who helped him. The money has been designated for scholarships and discretionary spending in the school’s communications program.

A Houston native, Rather earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at Sam Houston State in 1953.

Rather stepped down as CBS anchorman in March 2005 amid controversy over a discredited story on President Bush’s military service.
