David Cook’s ‘Today’ Show Cougar Frenzy

When an “American Idol” fan was spotted holding a sign that read “Cougars for Cook,” from the audience during this year’s competition, it marked just the beginning of David Cook’s cougar adoration.

When the ‘Idol” winner made an appearance on NBC’s the “Today” show Thursday morning, his legions of older female fans showed up to cheer him on.

“A lot of [your fans] are older women, right ladies? It’s the ‘Cougars for Cook,’” Meredith Vieira told Cook and the audience.

“In fact, my friend, who’s my age, is here,” Meredith, who is 54, confessed to the singer. “I’m not going to rat her out and say her name. [But she said] ‘Should I be embarrassed?’ I said, ‘No, look at him!’”

To which he responded with an affectionate, “Aww.”

Cook remained humble about his heartthrob status, telling Meredith, “As far as people thinking I’m pretty or something, I don’t know. It’s amazing what a haircut and forgetting to shave will do.”

Though many of Cook’s fan may skew older, the fan closest to his heart (and wrist) is seven-year-old Lindsey Rose Belcher, who was diagnosed with leukemia.

“Lindsey, I’m still wearing it,” Cook said holing up a bracelet Lindsey gave him. “I can’t wait to meet you on tour.”

Cook has been wearing the bracelet since early in his “Idol” journey.

With Cook’s brother, Adam, and fellow “Idol” contestant Luke Menard, both battling cancer, the “Idol” champ hopes his new found fame can help shed light on this devastating disease.

“Obviously like everyone else, I hate cancer and you know to be able to be in a position where I can hopefully do my part to eradicate it, I’m on board!” he said.

Cook performed “Time of My Life” for the fans that filled the “Today” plaza.

The fans were also cheering for another David. “Idol” runner-up David Archuleta, who belted out “Think of Me,” told Matt Lauer, “I’m hoping for the best.”
