Demi Lovato & Wilmer Valderrama Split After 6 Years: ‘We Are Better As Best Friends’

Another celebrity couple has called it quits. Demi Lovato
and Wilmer Valderrama are going their separate ways after nearly six years
together.

The pop superstar and the actor shared a joint statement on
their respective Instagram accounts Friday night to announce the split,
explaining that they work “better as best friends” than romantic
partners.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of
us,” the posts read, adding, “We will always be supportive of one
another.”

Demi, 23, and Wilmer, 36, began dating in 2010, and the
singer entered rehab shortly afterward. She told Cosmopolitan last September
that the only time they ever broke up was while she was going through a
relapse, “whether it
was drugs or in a bad place and rebelling against everybody.”

However, Demi explained that Wilmer remained devoted to her
throughout her struggle.

“People told him, ‘You should probably leave. She’s
on a spiral, and you’re going to be sucked down with it.’ But he was
like, ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.’ We
relate on a lot of levels,” she said at the time.

The former couple attended the Billboard Music Awards on May
22, and was photographed together two days later when Demi appeared on
“Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Their breakup follows other high-profile celebrity splits between
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, and Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik.
