Demi Moore On Overcoming Abandonment Fears & Her Body Image Issues

Demi Moore filed for divorce from husband Ashton Kutcher late last year and the actress got very candid with photographer and former “it girl”-turned mom, Amanda De Cadenet for Harper’s Bazaar, about her tiny frame and her life now.

In excerpts released by the magazine on Wednesday, when Amanda talked about her own fears of infidelity, and dishonesty, Demi admitted abandonment used to be one of her big fears.

“I used to think that what scared me was the idea of being abandoned until someone said to me, ‘Only children can be abandoned. Adults can’t be abandoned because we have a choice,” Demi told Amanda for the magazine’s February cover story. “Children don’t have a choice.’ So I started to rethink. ‘OK, it’s not that. What’s the underlying thread that really scares me?’ I think what scares me is not having the courage to reach my full potential.”

Although not mentioning her divorce specifically, Demi opened up about what freedom means to her.

“Somebody wrote something to me that said, ‘Don’t let your wounds make you become someone you’re not.’ That’s really powerful. And not taking life too seriously,” the actress said.

Demi, who appeared slimmer than usual as the divorce rumors swirled last year, said she accepts her figure today.

“I think I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body, and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin — thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would be saying to me, ‘You’re too thin, and you don’t look good,’” she said. “I find peace when I don’t see my body as my enemy, when I step back and have appreciation and look at all that my body has done for me. It’s allowed me to give birth to three beautiful children, allowed me to explore different roles as an actor, allowed me to be strong.”
