Dennis Hopper may be battling prostate cancer, but the star was strong enough to make an appearance on Hollywood Blvd. to accept his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday.
The star of such classic films as “Easy Rider,” “Hoosiers” “Apocalypse Now” and “Rebel Without A Cause,” appeared with a number of his children and grandchildren at the ceremony. He was introduced by Viggo Mortensen and honored by Jack Nicholson (who he co-starred with in “Easy Rider”).
Wearing jeans and a grey suit jacket, the actor, who appeared tiny and frail, was helped from his seat to the podium, where he waved to the crowd with a bandaged hand.
During his speech, Hopper explained that the bandages (including one over his right eye), were the result of a paparazzi encounter the day before. Hopper said the photographers shouted his name and it caused him to turn too quickly and fall.
He concluded his speech with a heartfelt thanks, telling the crowd that he loves everyone and the award meant “so much” to him.
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, On Thursday, Hopper’s estranged wife, Victoria Hopper, told Access in a statement that she wished her husband well at the ceremony despite their divorce acrimony.
“Dennis has had a long and amazing career. He well deserves this honor. I hope he has a wonderful day,” Victoria said in the exclusive statement.
According to court papers revealed this week, the “Easy Rider” star is terminally ill and now unable to undergo chemotherapy. His attorney has stated that his severe condition will prevent him from undergoing questioning in a deposition pertaining to the divorce proceedings.
