Dish Of Salt: Monday TV Round Up (February 8, 2010)

“Celebrity Fit Club” is back with what looks like their best cast ever.

Could “Heroes” be set for a heroic send off?

And, why are genealogy shows all the rage right now?

It’s all in our Monday TV Round Up from the Dish… below!

“Celebrity Fit Club” Returns
Eight overweight celebrities (and I use the term “celebrity” loosely) begin their “Biggest Loser”-style journey tonight to try and overcome their eating demons and shed the pounds, on the new season of VH1’s weight loss show, “Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp.” The cast includes Former “Baywatch” babe Nicole Eggert, “High School Musical” star Kaycee Stroh, heavy metal band Skid Row’s front man Sebastian Bach, bad boy singer Bobby Brown, tabloid target Kevin Federline and his ex girlfriend, Shar Jackson.

“I thought it was great that she wanted to go in and lose weight too,” Federline told our own Maria Menounous when he learned that his ex-girlfriend (and mother of two of his kids) had already signed up for the show prior to him. “I mean we’re doing this for our kids,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Our kids are getting older. We gotta run around with the kids all day long’… And keeping up with them when you’re like 245 pounds is not easy.”

Federline, a former backup dancer for ex-wife Britney Spears (and mother of his other two kids), says he gained over 40 pounds in the past couple of years. “I stopped dancing. I hadn’t danced for 5 years, ” he said. “I wound up… between not working out and over eating… and you know just sitting on the coach all day and eating bad, bad foods. Probably my age too, like hitting the 30 mark slows your metabolism down, so they say.”

Federline also blames depression as a reason he packed on the pounds. “Once you get depressed it’s just, you sit down, you don’t really feel like doing anything,” he explained. “You’re kind of discouraged about yourself, and then the weight gain too…that makes me more depressed. Before you know it, you look in the mirror and I don’t even recognize who I was anymore. My face was just huge.”

The contestants will compete for a $100,000 prize, which would give anyone a reason to cut out the pizza and soda. Check out “Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp” when it premieres tonight on VH1 at 9 PM.

“Heroes” Season Finale
I’d love to give you a little teaser of what happens in tonight’s season four finale of NBC’s “Heroes” – but truthfully, I stopped watching the show in season two. I was the biggest fan in the beginning, but then lost interest trying to follow one too many characters. Sylar’s good. Sylar’s bad. Sylar’s good. Too confusing. I’m guessing there are many others out there who agree with me. The show has lost a lot of steam in the ratings too. When it first premiered, the show attracted around 14 million viewers. Now it stands at around 7 million viewers. The question being asked by dedicated “Heroes” fans all over the Internet is whether or not this will serve as the series finale of the show as well. Though I hear the ending will feature a cliffhanger, I think it’s a safe bet it won’t be back for a season five.

Tracing Celebrity Roots On TV
Did you know that Meryl Streep was related to William Penn, the founder of… ya know… Pennsylvania (amongst other things!). Or that director Mike Nichols was related to Albert Einstein? This and other fascinating tidbits about 12 famous American’s family trees will be traced in the PBS documentary, “Faces Of America.” Eva Longoria Parker, chef Mario Batali, Dr. Oz, Stephen Colbert, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and director Mike Nichols are just some of the names profiled in the series. Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. uses the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore their family histories. The four-part documentary begins airing tonight on PBS.

And genealogy appears to be a hot topic on TV overall right now. NBC begins airing a show on March 5 called “Who Do You Think You Are?,” created by former “Friends” star Lisa Kudrow. That show will also trace the roots of celebrities including Brooke Shields, Susan Sarandon and Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was originally slated to air last year but wound up getting bumped. FOX had a similar project in development last year (which ironically, I auditioned for) but I don’t believe it ever got off the ground.
