Dish Of Salt: Wednesday TV Round Up (January 27, 2010)

“American Idol” rolled into Los Angeles for last night’s show and one standout audition has fans all a Twitter. And your favorite shows might be affected by tonight’s State Of The Union Address, but one former action star still has an all new episode airing.

Plus, what happened to make “Ugly Betty” go ‘Bye bye’? And what new reality show has me nostalgic over my high school boyfriend?

It’s all in my Wednesday TV Round Up.

Bye Bye “Betty”
Sad news for “Ugly Betty” fans (of which, I was one). ABC has decided to cancel the struggling series after four seasons. With four episodes left still to shoot, hopefully the executive producer Silvio Horta and the writers can tie up some loose ends for fans first though. Recent rumors have suggested that Betty (America Ferrera) will embark on a relationship with her boss, Daniel (Eric Mabius). That scenario seems to make sense considering the show upon which “Ugly Betty” was based, the Colombian Telenovela “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” ended with Betty falling in love with her boss. Didn’t we all eventually see that coming?

While the show started off with a bang in 2006, landing big time Fashionista guest stars like Victoria Beckham and Lindsay Lohan, it had begun to lag in the ratings by season three. Betty got a slight makeover to un-uglify herself a little bit at the beginning of season four and the show got dumped on Friday nights, where it struggled. More recently it was moved to Wednesday’s comedy lineup after hits “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town.” That too didn’t give the show the boost it needed to stay alive. And where was show star America Ferrera when this all went down? She’s in Sundance promoting her new film, “The Dry Land.” I only hope by the time the series finale airs Betty will have finally gotten those dreadful braces off!

State Of The Union
Speaking of “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town” if you are expecting fresh episodes tonight think again. President Obama’s State Of The Union Address means it’s repeat city all over the TV dial. Somehow “American Idol” will make the cut though. I guess when you pull in 28 million viewers for your show it makes sense to air it. Guess who is else is making the cut with a fresh new episode? Action star turned sheriff’s deputy Steven Seagal. An all-new episode of his A&E series “Steven Seagal Lawman” airs at 8 PM tonight.

Love Re-Connection
Ever wonder what happened to your first love… and if you two should hook up again? I call this retro dating. TV Land has a new series exploring just that possibility. The network will premiere a new series, “First Love, Second Chance” on Wednesday, March 10 at 10:00pm ET/PT. Couples from around the globe will reunite for one week where they will move in together and spend time re-connecting and trying to re-kindle their former love flame. Of course, I will be watching, as we all know I love all these darn dating shows.

A Star Is Born?
It turns out that singer-songwriter and Golden Globe winning actor Kris Kristofferson, who of course famously romanced Barbara Streisand in the 1976 flick” A Star Is Born,” has a son who is an actor, 26-year-old Jesse Kristofferson. He hasn’t done much so far but “American Idol” fans might recognize him. He’s not a singer and he didn’t audition for the show, but he is part of FOX’s marketing campaign for the show. Posters all over the country feature Jesse as aspiring auditioner #71376 in an ad with the slogan “They ALL start somewhere.” A little name value goes a long way in Hollywood. So I expect we will be seeing more with Jesse.

Last night’s “American Idol” featured some possible soon to be stars themselves. The judges seemed to take to contestant Andrew Garcia from Moreno Valley, California. And after last night’s audition, so have the fans. He’s up to 8,555 followers on what is believed to be his personal Twitter page and he Tweeted this to his fans: “You guys are seriously part of my family! Thank you so much for all the loving tweets and feedbacks my heart feels overjoyed! Love you all!!”

Andrew’s name is on the spoiler list of Top 24 contestants that is floating around the Internet. But whether or not this is really him on Twitter, I don’t know.
