Disney’s ‘High School Musical 2’ Shatters Record Books

It’s official. Disney’s “High School Musical 2” has graduated to a full-fledged record breaker.

Friday night’s debut of “HSM 2” on The Disney Channel drew an astounding 17.2 million viewers, making the program the most-watched basic cable telecast in history.

The ratings show kids and teens of all ages were tuned in to Friday’s premiere, earning “HSM 2” the record for the most-watched telecast of all time for kids in the 6-11 age group, and the 9-14 demographic.

It also became basic cable’s highest-rated movie ever, bumping TNT’s 2001 Western “Crossfire” from the record book.

While the original “High School Musical” also proved to be an overnight sensation for Disney when it bowed in 2006 (watched by 7.7 million viewers), the sequel eclipsed its predecessor by nearly 10 million viewers.

Access Hollywood was lucky to be the home of an early exclusive “High School Musical 2” screening, as stars Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale brought their new film directly to our stage on August 9 – one week before it was debuted to the rest of the world.
