Does Mel Gibson Have A Death Wish?

LOS ANGELES (August 2, 2006) ? Is Mel Gibson suicidal?

Will his wife leave him? And will he go to jail?

One day after apologizing to the Jewish community… there are more stunning developments in Mel Gibson?s meltdown.

Mel Gibson was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor drunken driving, having an elevated blood-alcohol level and having an open container of liquor in his car.

Was Mel Gibson looking to end it all the night of his arrest?

He was looking to get hurt, and this is how it all ended up,? Mike Fleeman of PEOPLE magazine tells Access. ?There is a dark place in Mel and it got darker.?

Mel went out drinking by himself. He went out, somebody very close to Mel told Fleeman, with an agenda — a death wish if you will.

Sadly, it wouldn’t be the first time….

He expressed as much to ABC?s Diane Sawyer in an interview on ?Good Morning America? in 2004.

?You thought of jumping out a window??, Sawyer asked him.

?I really did. I remember looking down and going ?Man, it’s just easier this way,?? Gibson replied to her.

As the fall out continues,.yesterday Mel released a second statement in which he apologized for making the anti-Semitic remarks, saying:

“Please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot.”

But he also went a step further, saying he would like to, “….meet with leaders in the Jewish community?”

And today a Beverly Hills rabbi has extended an invitation to Gibson to speak at his synogogue on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.

But one prominent Hollywood producer, Merv Adelson, placed an ad in today?s LA Times blasting Gibson, saying: “Let’s make ourselves proud and not support this jerk in any way, just because he’s a so-called ?star.? People like Mel Gibson give us all a bad name.”

Fleeman notes Gibson?s continued troubles with alcohol.

?Somebody said ‘you want a cigarette”. He said ?No I’ve quit these.’ He held up the drink and said ?but I can’t quit this.”

This week’s PEOPLE paints a picture of Mel living it up without his wife, Robyn, at Malibu’s “Moonshadows” hours before his arrest.

?Mel’s world is one in which he goes into a bar, women are attracted to him,? Fleeman points out. ?There are probably a million cell phone pictures like that out there. Unfortunately, these came at a very bad time.?

Mel’s problems with alcohol go way back. His drunken behavior reportedly once prompted an intervention from his “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome” co-star Tina Turner, who sent him a photograph of himself with the message, “Don’t (expletive) this up” scrawled on it.

But Robyn, to whom Mel has been married for 26 years, is his main support system.

?The real medal goes to my wife, who’s a wonderful woman,? Gibson said recently.

PEOPLE?s Fleeman: ?Robin, who’s been married to Mel a long time and has born seven of his children is behind him 100%. ?

As for jail for Mel… Fleeman says ?no way.?

?He might have a license suspension, there might be a fine. But I don’t see jail time.?
