Dr. Jan Adams Arrested In California For DUI

The Los Angeles plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West’s mother before she died last fall was arrested early Thursday morning in Northern California on suspicion of drunken driving.

Dr. Jan Adams was booked into jail after the California Highway Patrol caught him using an off-ramp to get on a freeway shortly after 2:30 a.m. Authorities were alerted when motorists called in to report the driver of a gray Jaguar going the wrong way.

Adams also was arrested for driving on a suspended license from a 2006 DUI conviction.

The former host of the television series “Plastic Surgery: Before and After” made headlines after Donda West, 58, died Nov. 10 while recovering from breast reduction, tummy tuck and liposuction procedures he performed on her a day earlier.

An autopsy report found that the mother of rapper Kanye West likely died of heart disease coupled with complications after plastic surgery.

Before Thursday’s incident, the Medical Board of California was investigating whether Adams’ medical license should be revoked or suspended because of two previous alcohol-related arrests.

Adams had been working under a temporary 150-day license because he owed alimony or child support, but it expired at midnight Wednesday, said Debbie Nelson, an analyst with the state medical board.

He was participating in a program for debtors managed by the Department of Consumer Affairs, which issues temporary licenses to professionals until they pay the family support funds they owe, she said.

Medical board records showed Adams has paid out more than $775,000 in civil settlements from four malpractice lawsuits, two of them from 2001 and two of them from last year.

In January, Adams told Larry King on his CNN talk show that his business had almost been ruined by the publicity surrounding West’s death.

Adams has appeared as a plastic surgery expert on such shows as “Oprah.”

He also had his own show on the Discovery Health channel and markets a line of skin care products.

Adams is scheduled for arraignment in Solano County Superior Court on Monday. A call to West’s record label was not immediately returned Thursday.

Since Donda West’s death, California lawmakers have pushed for greater protections for cosmetic surgery patients. A Los Angeles assemblyman has introduced a bill requiring regular inspections of outpatient clinics where such procedures are performed, while a Southern California assemblyman introduced a bill requiring pre-surgery health screenings for patients undergoing cosmetic surgery.
