Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar Selfie Leads Twitter Year In Review 2014

If anyone actually broke the Internet this year, it was Ellen DeGeneres – with some help from her Oscar friends.

The Oscars host owns the most-retweeted Tweet of the Year, according to Twitter’s #YearOnTwitter data released on Wednesday, with her star-studded selfie from Oscar night racking up more than 3.3 million retweets.

This year’s “Golden Tweet” featured Ellen, along with Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, Lupita Nyong’o, and Lupita’s brother all crammed into the frame.

Previous “Golden Tweet” winners include Lea Michele in 2013 and President Barack Obama in 2012.

Ellen’s Tweet also topped the list of topics which sparked the most Tweets per minute, racking up 254,644 Tweets per minute. Her pizza delivery moment at the Oscars came in fourth, while the Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers had the second most Tweets per minute (229,533), and Imagine Dragons’ Grammy performance with Kendrick Lamar finished third (171,593).

Meanwhile, Lorde took the fifth and sixth slots for her Grammy win and performance, respectively.

No surprise, Miley Cyrus also cracked the Top 10 Tweet-per-minute moments, with her Video of the Year win at the VMAs (seventh place); “Gravity’s” sixth win on Oscar night came in eighth. Beyonce’s show-stopping performance at the VMAs followed by Jay Z carrying daughter Blue Ivy onto the stage to present her with the Vanguard Award finished ninth and Lorde’s Best Rock Video VMAs win rounded out the Top 10.

The #YearOnTwitter data also noted that Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, Demi Lovato and Rihanna gained the most new Twitter followers in 2014, with Katy’s 13.1 million new followers leading the way.

Justin Bieber, One Directions’ Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Liam Payne, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Louis Tomlinson and Taylor Swift were the most “mentioned” celebrity personalities on Twitter.

Overall, Katy Perry takes the cake as the most-followed star on Twitter with 60 million. Justin Bieber is catching up with 56 million. President Barack Obama is the most followed political or world leader with 50 million Twitter followers, putting him in third behind the pop stars.
