Ellen Pompeo Lashes Out At Celebutantes, Under-Weight Rumors

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 10, 2007) – Ellen Pompeo has hit back at critics who say she’s too thin.

In the new edition of Los Angeles Confidential magazine, which hits stands August 15, the “Grey’s Anatomy” actress said she is naturally slim. She admits the uproar over her figure has made her worry about the effects on her younger, female fans.

“I just worry about the girls who look up to me — I don’t want them to think I starve myself or don’t eat, and that to be like me that’s what they have to do,” Pompeo told the mag.

The actress who plays Meredith Grey on the popular ABC show, which returns for its fourth season this fall, isn’t just concerned about the effects focusing on her weight has. Pompeo also hit out at the focus on celebutantes, without naming names of course.

“What are we doing to this younger generation? It’s not very responsible,” she sighed. “We are so focused on the wrong things. We’re teaching young girls that this is what they should be focusing on: rich and famous girls who are rich and famous for nothing.”

Pompeo will have her own chance to shape a young person’s beliefs, presumably in the future when she and fiancé, music producer Chris Ivery have children.

“I do,” she said when asked if there were children in her future. “With the show, I just don’t know if it’s entirely fair to myself and to everybody else right now. We’ll see what happens.”
