Eric Dane Sailing To TNT For Michael Bay’s The Last Ship; Bay’s Black Sails Set For 2014 Premiere On Starz

Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane is taking up residency on a ship in TNT’s 2014-due apocalyptic drama “The Last Ship.”

TNT announced on Tuesday it had greenlit the series from Executive Producer Michael Bay (“Transformers”), and is based on the novel by William Brinkley.

Dane will play Captain Tom Chandler, who is aboard the U.S.S. Nathan James, a ship whose inhabitants survive after a global catastrophe nearly wipes out mankind. Rhona Mitra, formerly of “The Practice” (and more recently Cinemax’s “Strike Back”), plays paleomicrobiologist Rachel Scott, who is working on the Nathan James and investigating what killed billions worldwide. Adam Baldwin from “Firefly” plays Slattery, second in command on the ship. Tracy Middendorf (Babbette from “Boardwalk Empire”) will play Dane’s on-screen wife, Darien Chandler.

“The Last Ship has all the elements of a big Hollywood blockbuster, from its epic storytelling to its top-notch cast headed by the perfect leading man, Eric Dane,” Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), said in a statement. “Michael Bay and his fellow executive producers have shaped William Brinkley’s story and characters into an exceptional drama full of action, suspense, tragedy and triumph. ‘The Last Ship’ is smart fun television that takes you on a great ride.”

In related Bay news, Starz dropped the key art for their new series from the executive producer — “Black Sails,” (and you can see it here).

The series, which premieres in January 2014, focuses on the pirate adventures of Captain Flint, played by Toby Stephens, previously of Cinemax’s “Strike Back.” Hunky Zach McGowan of Showtime’s “Shameless” plays his rival – Captain Charles Vane.

The series takes place 20 years before Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, “Treasure Island.”
