Ethel Kennedy didn’t help her grandson, Conor, meet Taylor Swift as had been reported, but she voiced her approval of the country cutie dating a member of their esteemed family on Wednesday.
“We should be so lucky,” the wife of the late Robert Kennedy said on Wednesday at the HBO portion of the Television Critics Association summer tour in Beverly Hills, when asked her thoughts on the idea of Taylor possibly one day becoming a Kennedy.
Rory Kennedy, Mrs. Kennedy’s eleventh child, who made the moving and emotional documentary, “Ethel,” which premieres in October 2012 on HBO, suggested her mother didn’t need to further answer the question from the reporter during the press conference.
“You can leave it at that,” the daughter quipped.
And while Rory’s documentary paints an intimate portrait of her mother, it also shows off her spitfire side, something her mother showed on stage by continuing to answer the Taylor-related question.
“Rory went to a concert with her two little girls and that’s what started it,” Mrs. Kennedy said, also clarifying that she did not play matchmaker to her grandson and the country singer, who have recently been photographed side by side.
Rory interviewed her mother and a number of her brothers and sisters in the documentary film, which covers her mother’s Republican upbringing, her parents’ courtship, John F. Kennedy’s presidency, and Robert Kennedy’s presidential run.
One of the more humorous moments from the documentary was a story about how Mrs. Kennedy used to take her children for play time at the FBI while J. Edgar Hoover was in charge, a man not fond of youngsters. In the film, it’s revealed that in her trademark red pen, Mrs. Kennedy wrote in the suggestion box, “Get a new director,” something she apologized for on stage on Wednesday.
“It was rude and I apologize,” she stated.
Aside from the lighter moments, Mrs. Kennedy’s deep pain at losing her beloved husband, Robert, who was murdered in 1968, is also touched upon in the documentary, but she revealed on stage on Thursday how she got through it, something also covered in Rory’s film.
“I’d say faith had a lot to do with being able to get through everything and [it was] always very comforting,” Mrs. Kennedy said.
“When we lost Bobby, I would wake up in the morning and think… ‘He’s OK. He’s in heaven and he’s with Jack and a lot of my brothers and sisters and my parents,’ so it made it very easy to get through the day thinking he’s OK,” she added.
