Exclusive: Go Behind The Scenes Of Katy Perry’s ‘Rise’ Video

In this exclusive, extended behind-the-scenes feature, Katy Perry walks us through the making of the music video for her moving and emotional song “Rise.”

Shot in Snow Canton, Utah, and featuring Katy as the only actor on screen, the video plays with themes of struggles and overcoming challenges, also represented in the song title “Rise” and the inspiring lyrics of hope and perseverance.

On set, Katy’s character moves from an abandoned-looking hangar, where she struggles while attached to an enormous pinkish parachute, to the red mountains and dirt of the Utah landscape.

“I have extreme OCD,” Katy confesses in the clip. “So this is a very difficult shoot for me, to be dirty all the time.”

Later, Katy struggles as she is still attached to the pink
parachute in the water. But after calling on the “angels” in her
lyrics, she is released and floating in the air and now the tangled strings and
weight of the parachute that once held her back now
allow her to “rise” and float effortlessly in the sky.

Referencing her lyrics as she struggles with the weight of
the chute until her release into the air, Katy recites “Rise” lyrics n the
video: “I’ll fight it, I’ll fight it/ I will transform.”

And at the end of the video, Perry floats skyward when the parachute eventually takes flight.

The full-length video dropped on August 4. In mid-July, NBC announced it was using Katy’s single for its Olympics coverage, and the network released its own video, which features Olympians competing in their sporting events.
