Federal Government Investigating Heath Ledger Death

The federal government is investigating the death of Heath Ledger, Access Hollywood has learned.

An official for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed to Access that an investigation is underway now that the New York Medical Examiner has released the results of Ledger’s toxicology test, which found the actor died from a combination of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.

“This is a routine procedure when anybody overdoses,” DEA Public Affairs Section Chief Garrison Courtney told Access. “We look at whether the controlled substances that were taken were legitimate, whether they were ordered under a false name and how they might have been purchased.”

For the DEA, Ledger’s star status does not weigh in to the investigation.

“The fact that Heath Ledger is a celebrity does not make this investigation any different from a routine procedure in circumstances like this,” Courtney added.

The 28-year-old actor was found dead on Jan. 22 inside a Manhattan apartment.
