FROM THE NEWS DESK: Goodbye Rosie, Welcoming Back Regis & More

By George Larrimore and McKay Heim

OH, ROSIE! Rosie’s exit from “The View” was not a very well kept secret before it became Fact with her official announcement this morning. The Big Guessing Game now is where is she going? Telepictures gave us a luke warm denial that she’s in talks for a talk show with them and their partners Warner Bros. That also led to speculation that Rosie may have something other than Talk in the works. Her guest shots on FX’s “Nip/Tuck” have raised her acting profile.

We polled a bunch of women about Rosie. Here are some of the responses.
” It seems like she’s just become so opinionated and closed minded that it’s irritating to hear her speak…… ‘The View,’ however, has seemed to do wonders for her career, and I think it’s a mistake for her to leave it.”

“I think Rosie is a great TV performer. I will watch her if I am able to catch the show but I won’t go out of my way to make sure I do. And I think it was only a matter of time before she left The View. She wasn’t a right fit for that show.”

“I personally started watching ‘The View’ again when Rosie came on. It was controversial and more interesting with her there. I think this was a good gig for her, not sure why she is so fast to move on. I like her in this role, on her own it was a little too much for me.”

“I think Rosie is way too opinionated for a daytime talk show – she needs to be on a cable channel that is geared towards her lifestyle choice – middle America is not ready for her and her big mouth anymore.”

TIME TO REBUILD: “The View” needs something like this weekend’s NFL Draft to re-stock its talent roster. The show hasn’t really found anybody to replace Star Jones. And Rosie came in to take Meredith Vieira’s job. Plus, in season’s past Barbara Walters has tried to take it a little slower in the summer time. And then there are the numbers; Rosie managed to pull in another 600,000 or so warm bodies for “The View” each day, over and above last season’s numbers.

SWEEPS BEAT: How do we know it’s the start of May Sweeps? Because Regis Philbin timed his recovery from heart surgery to come back to work on ‘Live…’ tomorrow. The show is expecting a bump out of that well-timed event.

WHERE DID THEY GO? A really insightful piece on television on the front page of the Life Section in USA Today this morning asking Where Did The Audience Go. Gary Levin writes that major prime time shows, including “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” “ER,” “My Name Is Earl,” “The Simpsons,” “CSI: Miami,” “24,” “American Idol” and more have hit record or near record ratings lows in the past few weeks. Reasons? Levin sites an earlier switch to Daylight Savings Time, extended breaks for shows like “Lost” and “Heroes” that have become too frustrating for appointment viewers. And DVR use is up by 10 percent in a year.

RECUPERATING: Jack Valenti has been released from a Baltimore hospital, a couple of weeks after suffering a stroke. The ex-President of the Motion Picture Association (and a confidante of President Lyndon Johnson) is 85. The word “courage” is widely overused in Hollywood but Roger Ebert is someone who has it. Pictures of the Chicago-based film critic turned up on the internet today in which he appears severely compromised by his ongoing battle with cancer. Roger said ‘take ‘em,’ he isn’t hiding his battle from anybody. Ebert has lost part of his jaw and for now cannot talk. But he’s going to keep going to the movies and he’s going to keep writing about them.

ONLY AT ACCESS HOLLYWOOD: We don’t have a lot of conversations here at Access Hollywood about Science, Math or Medicine (unless it’s something Angelina Jolie is involved with) but we were talking this morning about the recent discovery of the new earth-like planet known as 581 C. It’s 20.5 light years from Hollywood. At that point our very enthusiastic pal Scott Mantz jumped into the conversation noting that if the Starship Enterprise cranked up to Warp Factor 5 “it would be there in one day.”
