Natalie will appear in a three-episode arc (starting on May 9) leading up to the two-hour Season 1 finale, which airs on May 16.

Irene is Sherlock’s former lover on the CBS drama, who has not yet been seen, but has been mentioned.

“We’re moving to the next chapter in our show – and in some ways, to a previous chapter in Holmes’ story,” Executive Producer and creator Rob Doherty said in a statement. “Irene Adler is perhaps the most pivotal relationship in Sherlock’s life, and I can’t think of an actress better suited to the challenge than Natalie.”

Natalie previously played Anne Boleyn on Showtime’s “The Tudors.” She currently stars as Margaery Tyrell in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
