‘Game Of Thrones’: Gwendoline Christie On Brienne’s Feelings

In addition to The Purple Wedding ending in “Game of Thrones” last Sunday, there were some big dramatic moments for several characters, including one that cut Gwendoline Christie’s Brienne of Tarth to her core.

Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) pointed out Brienne’s unladylike behavior, suggested she flitted between masters, and then dropped the mic after pointing out that the physically powerful plain Jane is in love with the Kingslayer — Jaime Lannister.

“When I read the script, part of me died and the actor part of me was thrilled that that poor character could be placed in that awful situation,” Gwendoline told AccessHollywood.com. “Far worse than a situation of physical combat is one of having to be emotionally bare or confronted.”

Cersei’s words were so hard for Brienne to handle, she couldn’t even respond.

“She’s just stuck a knife directly into her stomach,” Gwendoline said.

But it was also an eye-opening conversation.

“From my perspective, what that moment does is it pricks Brienne’s mind as to the possibility of what that relationship might have stirred in her. That’s precisely what it does. She doesn’t think she loves him, it’s not that she thinks she doesn’t love him, for a second there is the possibility of what this might mean,” Gwendoline said.

“[It’s something she has] never considered,” the actress continued. “It’s like, you know when you’re at school and someone says, ‘Oh, you love him.’ And you say, ‘No, I don’t! No, I don’t!’ And you go bright red and you go, ‘No I don’t!’ And you feel mortified.”

“Game of Thrones” continues Sundays at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
