‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5, Episode 4 Recap – ‘Sons Of The Harpy’

Melisandre made Jon an offer, Jamie Lannister and Bronn arrived in Dorne, and we finally met the Sand Snakes in Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones.”

Elsewhere, Tyrion Lannister figured out his kidnapper’s plans and Sansa Stark was given something to look forward to, but there was tragedy in the world of Daenerys Targaryen during an attack in Meereen in “Game of Thrones” Season 5, Episode 4 – “Sons of The Harpy.”

Here’s our recap of Sunday’s “Thrones”:

Tyrion Lannister & Ser Jorah Mormont

He should have stayed in that caravan with Varys! After being dragged to a shore, kidnapper Ser Jorah Mormont binds Tyrion’s hands and tosses him into am stolen boat. Cleverly, though, Tyrion uses the time with his captor to spot clues, piecing together his captor’s identity (the bear sigil gave Ser Jorah Mormont away) and his plan. Jorah wants to win back Queen Daenerys’ favor by bringing her Tyrion. But, when Tyrion gets a little too clever and suggests Daenerys might just as easily keep Tyrion and execute Jorah, an annoyed Jorah knocks Tyrion out.

Jaime Lannister & Bronn of The Blackwater

On another body of water, Jaime is sailing with Bronn on a merchant ship to Dorne (passing Brienne’s homeland of Tarth on the way). Down in the barrel of the ship, he finally explains his mission. “We’re not kidnapping their princess, we’re rescuing my niece to bring her back to her family,” Jaime tells the knighted sellsword. “Your niece?” Bronn asks, raising an eyebrow. Eventually, it dons on Bronn why Jaime is the one who has to save Myrcella. “You set your brother free, didn’t you? I bet your sister didn’t like that,” he says, before telling Jaime if he sees Tyrion again to give him his regards. “He murdered my father. If I ever see him, I’ll split him in two,” Jaime replies.

Later, the two arrive on Dorne’s shores at night. Trouble finds them as soon as the sun is up (it appears the merchant sea captain may have snitched). Bronn quickly takes care of three of the four Dornishmen, and Jamie’s golden hand helps him in his fight against the other.

The Sand Snakes

Jaime and Bronn were right. The merchant ship captain did tattle on them – he tried to sell his information to Oberyn’s daughter, Obara Sand. Now, the man is buried up to his head in the sand, with scorpions circling. Ellaria, the late Oberyn’s lover, tells her daughter, Tyene and Oberyn’s other daughters, Obara and Nym, that Prince Doran will do nothing to avenge his brother. It’s up to them, she says. They all agree they’re in on this revenge plot together, and they mustn’t let Jaime get to Myrcella. As for the ship’s captain, he gets a spear through the head (courtesy of Obara).

King’s Landing: The Lannisters, The Tyrells, The High Sparrow & The Faith Militant

Eugene Simon as Lancel Lannister (Helen Sloan/HBO)

While running a Small Council meeting, Cersei tells Mace Tyrell he needs to go to the Iron Bank – with a Kingsguard escort of Ser Meryn Trant – to help the Crown get better terms on the money they owe. With Mace being shipped away, the Small Council is even smaller, so Cersei makes her next move, sitting down with the High Sparrow. This holy man is now the “chosen representative of the Seven” and she enables him to bring back their faith army – the Faith Militant – to deal with sinners. And… she just so happens to mention a sinner is in their very midst, “shielded by gold and privilege.” Cue the Faith Militant heading out into King’s Landing, destroying all the corruption they see – alcohol barrels and Littlefinger’s brothel to name a few. Lancel Lannister, Cersei’s cousin, takes a step further into his faith, having an emblem caved into his head, before he heads out with the rest of the Faith Militant to take a high ranking sinner captive – Margaery’s brother. “Ser Loras Tyrell of House Tyrell, you have broken the laws of house and men,” Lancel says as the Faith Militant seize him. “Who do you think you are?” Ser Loras asks. “Justice,” Lancel states.

Margaery is outraged that her brother has been taken and sweet-talks King Tommen into taking action. So the young King stomps right up to his mother. She’s not the one who took Ser Loras prisoner, Cersei says innocently. Tommen is the King. He must talk to the High Sparrow himself. Despite his Kingsguard, Tommen gets nowhere with the High Sparrow. The holy man is praying and his men won’t even let the King up to see him. A few peasants shouting “bastard!” and “abomination!” at Tommen in the street help force the King to retreat. He gets no sympathy back at the palace from his wife, who leaves. “I need to be with my family, your grace,” Margaery tells him.

The Wall: The Baratheons, Melisandre & Jon Snow

As Stannis watches Jon Snow in the courtyard at The Wall, his wife, Selyse Baratheon, refers to Jon as Ned Stark’s bastard by a “tavern slut,” but Stannis doesn’t sound convinced of the rumors of Jon’s parentage. “Perhaps. That wasn’t Ned Stark’s way,” he says. Moments later, Melisandre strolls by (Selyse scurries away) to make sure that when the Baratheon forces finally march on Winterfell, Stannis will bring her along.

Later, Jon is signing letters of requests for help at The Wall when Melisandre visits him, opens her robe and starts talking about making shadows together. But he turns her saucy offer down. His heart still belongs to the late Ygritte. Standing up, Melisandre ties up her dress and heads to the door. “You know nothing, Jon Snow,” she tells him before leaving.

Winterfell: Sansa Stark & Petyr Baelish

In the catacombs at Winterfell, Sansa stands at the statue of Lyanna Stark (her late aunt, and Ned’s sister). Littlefinger shares a little history lesson of a tournament he attended when he was younger, where Rhaegar Targaryen won the event and then rode past his wife and placed a crown of roses in Lyanna’s lap. “How many tens of thousands had to die because Rhaegar chose your aunt?” Littlefinger says as he and Sansa look at the statue. “Yes, he chose her and then he kidnapped her and raped her,” Sansa replies. Talk then turns to the present — Littlefinger is leaving her at Winterfell. Cersei wants him at King’s Landing, and he doesn’t want her to get suspicious. But Sansa won’t be alone for long. Littlefinger expects Stannis to take Winterfell as he marches South, and he believes Stannis will make her Wardeness of the North. “You are the last surviving Stark, he needs you,” Littlefinger says before he kisses her – on the lips – goodbye.

Daenerys Targaryen

Hizdahr Zo Loraq is back in front of Dany, and complaining. It’s the annual day the fighting pits open, and he is requesting once again that she allow them to open them. Dany refuses. As he speaks to her, trouble begins to erupt in Meereen. The Sons of the Harpy bait her Unsullied into the streets by slaughtering a few men. When the Unsullied head out to fight, they are drawn into a trap, and cornered on both sides. Out in the town, more members of the Sons of the Harpy take down smaller pockets of Daenerys’ Unsullied. Ser Barristan Selmy hears the bells ringing, and heads in the direction of the fighting. In the melee, Grey Worm is stabbed, but he keeps fighting, just as Ser Barristan arrives to take on at least a dozen of the men in gold masks. Greatly outnumbered, they fight hard. And then, Ser Barristan is knifed and taken down. He does not move when he hits the floor. Grey Worm, already wounded, shakes his friend, then falls beside him.

“Game of Thrones” continues Sunday at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
