George Clooney & Amal Make Fashion & Political Statements At Golden Globes

Amal Clooney made her Golden Globe debut on the arm of new husband George Clooney on Sunday.

“I told her you can’t quite prepare for it because it’s a little nutty,” George told Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush on the red carpet.

The stunning Mrs. Clooney handled all the flashing bulbs with her usual eloquence.

“It’s fun and I’m very excited to be celebrating George and the big award he’s receiving,” Amal told Billy.

George, who was being presented with the prestigious Cecil B. Demille award on Sunday, said the goal was not to slur his acceptance speech.

“No, no flask. I gotta talk tonight,” he joked.

All jokes aside, George used his Globes night to make a very serious statement as he wore a “Je Suis Charlie” pin on his chest, as a tribute to the massacre in Paris where 12 people were killed at the offices of Paris newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

“I just think it’s a very important day quite honestly. I think we have millions and millions of people and leaders of countries and all religions walking arm in arm, not just in Paris but around the world to say that we’re not going to allow fear to rule. We’re not going to allow that to win. I think that’s an important day and it should be celebrated,” he explained.

George’s international and human rights attorney wife also addressed the issue.

“I have the same message,” she told Access. “It’s been really moving actually to see the scene this morning and see Muslim leaders and Jewish leaders and Christian leaders all united to show there’s no division between those communities. It’s between everyone being united against the criminals who carried out the brutal acts this week.”

George said he was also prepared to laugh a little during the ceremony, even if it came at his own expense.

“[Tina Fey and Amy Poehler] make the best hosts,” he credited. “I really enjoy them, so we’ll see. I hope [they make jokes about me].”

Once he took the stage, he offered a heartfelt message to his new wife.

“It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love. Even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life and when your whole life is 53 years, cue Amy to start the jokes,” he said while accepting his award. “Amal, whatever the alchemy is that brought us together I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.”

The newlywed couple married in September 2014 in Venice, Italy and could be seen waving to cameras from the canals through the city. So why were they so open on their big day?

“We were running around on a boat. You don’t want to hide underneath,” George told Billy of being photographed on his special day. “We did [enjoy it]… Everybody knows that [I married up]. I did damn well.”
