Glam Slam: 5 All-American Summer Styles

During the summer, our family loves to do all kinds of old-school things like hit the farmers market, a fireworks show or two and the occasional Southern Fish Fry.

Dressing for these types of things is always fun, but can be challenging. It’s good to be patriotic, but you don’t want to go overboard like the woman in the photo!

The new InStyle has your easy outfit guide for five quintessential summer occasions.

Clam Bake

Opt for a lacy tank paired with a loose wrap skirt for a look that’s polished enough for your upcoming feast. Complete the look with flat espadrilles (the shoe of the summer!) – they make walking in the sand easy and can be slipped off as needed.

A Baseball Game

Skip the date night ensembles! It’s all about laid-back basics meant for enjoying the game. Go for a tank and shorts in light colors to deflect as much of the heat as possible. Retro shades add an element of style and a cross-body bag keeps your hands free to snatch up any fly balls headed your way.

A Day at the County Fair

Try out some classic rides and sample yummy treats in a look that is just as fun as the arcade games. Head-to-toe pastels are far from saccharine when you mix prints and textures. Think a tough cotton moto jacket over a striped dress with embroidered details, and top it off with spiky gold rings and a sharp envelope bag.

A Fireworks Show

Nothing says summer celebration quite like a pyrotechnic display. Layer up to watch the sparkling skies. Avoid mosquito bites with slouchy trousers in a neutral hue and keep a colorful sweater stashed in your bag in case of any brisk breezes. A simple top with texture and contrasting sandals are the perfect finishing touches.

A Lunch at the Country Club

Looking your best calls for sweet and sophisticated pieces with a youthful twist. Try a ladylike combo of a full skirt and floral crop top (think boxy, not body hugging!) is sure to please the trad crowd without going full-on pearl necklace and pleats. Add a mint green purse and sculptural gold jewelry to keep the overall effect from looking too Betty a la Mad Men.
