Aloha! Loving Lupita Nyong’o’s palm tree dress, it’s the epitome of summer and also one of the season’s biggest trends.
Here are five easy ways to add a little tropical punch to your wardrobe without looking like a tourist in a bad Hawaiian shirt.
PICK YOUR PRINT
There are so many beautiful prints to choose from, and you can find them on everything from slip on sneakers to jumpsuits and rompers. If a large print feels overwhelming, look for a smaller one. And if wearing a traditional tropical print feels a little too Tiki Ti-ish to you…get in the trend in a more modern way- try a digital print of a tropical landscape instead. I bought an awesome linen tee with a print of a palm tree scene, which I love. Throw on white jeans or shorts and you get an easy breezy vibe without going full-tilt tropical.
PICK YOUR BODY PART
Tropical prints are sure to draw attention, so make sure you are comfortable with the body part they will highlight. If you love your upper body, a cute top or figure flattering dress are great options. If you are a tush girl, go for PJ style loose pants, skirt or shorts.
PAIR WITH SOLIDS
Going for a head-to-toe look, like with a tropical print jumpsuit is a statement-making look. If you don’t want to go that far, ground the look with solid pieces. I have tropical print pants that I wear with a solid navy shirt and that keeps things from getting too crazy.
KEEP ACCESSORIES CASUAL
I love Lupita’s wedge sandals, which perfectly compliment her fun and sassy dress. Save the fierce, edgy stilletos for other occasions- wedges or flat sandals are a better choice. A cute clutch made of raffia, wicker, or a neutral material is ideal and keep other jewelry and accessories to a minimum. Let the tropical element of your ensemble take center stage.
This is a playful look that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Go with the flow and enjoy!
