Glam Slam: Bag Trends For 2011

I Heart handbags. No, wait. Make that I’m OBSESSED with handbags!

I love a good purse and I’m in good company because I’ve yet to meet a woman who doesn’t! Which styles will be big for Spring?

Melissa Richardson Akkaway, owner of the Beckley Boutique in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, (a favorite of Cameron Diaz, the Kardashians, Reese Witherspoon and Lea Michele) shares the Top 5 Bag Trends.

The clutch is an essential accessory in everyone’s wardrobe. For Spring, my advice is to update that solid black clutch that everyone has and purchase one that has more detail like an exotic skin or a patchwork clutch. Embellished clutches are huge right now as well and we are even seeing Gypsy and Indian inspired looks fly out the door. My favorite thing about clutches… you can wear them day or night and they’re a great item to bring on your travels because they’re small and light and they can change a look entirely.

This trend is still thriving as it just continues to be a chic alternative to the everyday hobo and it seems that tons of people love being hands free. It’s a very modern look and we see moms wearing cross body bags as well as teenagers so it seems to be incredibly versatile and appealing to women of all ages.

Everyone loves a casual and light bag for Spring. With warmer weather around the corner, people want fabrics that feel lighter and come in lighter tones. Canvas feels easy but always looks chic and everyone from Gap and Target to more expensive retailers carry their own version. My favorite bags in canvas are tote shaped – they always look classic, sometimes preppy but always on trend.

I’m stocking these incredible bold colored Indian inspired bags. They make a huge statement and add major style to anyone’s wardrobe. My favorite look is jeans and a simple tee with a super chic colorful, yet casual printed bag.

Backpacks are back in a big way and they’ve definitely gotten trendier since the 4th grade! A great leather backpack in a light or nude colored leather is going to be huge for Spring and they’re great for everything from travel to every day wear.
