Glam Slam: Bag Week — Travel Bag Essentials

As someone who clocks alot of mileage for “Project Runway,” Tim Gunn knows a thing or two about traveling must-haves.

“I always travel with extra underwear, just in case,” Tim says. “I usually make an assumption that I can have shirts laundered or a suit pressed but you never know about underwear. It’s a whole different matter. And I of course travel with all of my skin products. That’s why I can’t ever carry a bag on because I have too many liquids and things in it, but when you get to be my age, you have to do all that you can to help your skin. And I always travel with a good book.”

Here are my own travel essentials:

ENERGIZE
I have never taken a trip without Emergen-C, the vitamin supplement which provides 1000 mg of Vitamin C. So far, so good. Maybe it’s a mental thing, but I have never gotten sick! I like the raspberry flavor. www.emergenc.com

COOL SPRITZ
We all know how flying zaps the moisture from your skin. For an instant and refreshing pick me up, La Roche-Posay Mini Thermal Spring Water is soothing and provides anti-oxidant protection. www.larocheposay.us (Leighton Meester is a fan of the brand)

FRESHEN UP
I thought this was a pretty ingenious idea…powdered mouthrinse! Supersmile, a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Ripa and Johnny Depp, created this ultra portable mouth wash- just add water to each single dose packet to freshen breath and whiten teeth. www.supersmile.com

FLIGHT-FRIENDLY BEAUTY
I always carry travel-size products in case I don’t like the products at the hotel. Right now I am using Molton Brown shampoo, conditioner body wash and lotion. (Enlivening Toko-Yazu is a warm, delicious scent) www.moltonbrown.com. As for makeup, I have a NARS kit that featured several lip colors, lip glosses and cheek colors. It’s slim, light and is easy to carry. www.nars.com

MULTI-TASKER
Mama Mio may be skincare for mamas-to-be, but I am still using the company’s Wonder-full Balm. Love this stuff! It will save you room in your bag because it can do so many things…lip balm, cuticle smoother. I use it on my hands, knees, elbows and feet to help with extremely dry skin. I even use a bit on my hair to smooth flyaways. www.mamamio.com

DON’T FORGET….
I get cold on planes…so I always carry a cashmere wrap and I also have some Rick Owens jersey cardigans, which are the ultimate in chic travel wear. They are easy to throw on and throw in my bag because they don’t wrinkle. Tim Gunn tells me he doesn’t travel with a Blackberry, but I can’t leave home without mine or my iPod. And finally – don’t forget some snacks…Clif Bars are great because they are healthy, filling and they aren’t messy and they don’t melt.
