Glam Slam: Become A Beauty MacGyver

Who would have guessed Richard Dean Anderson’s role from the hit ‘80s show “MacGyver”, would still be part of pop culture nearly thirty years later. “MacGyver” has even become part of our everyday slang… here’s how the Urban Dictionary breaks it down:

MacGyver
v. To use ingenuity to fix or remedy a problem using only the tools available at hand.

n. Someone who can regularly cobble together solutions to problems using only the tools available at hand.

And those skills can come in handy for any of us, especially when a bad hair day strikes… InStyle Hair transforms you into a beauty MacGyver revealing household staples that can serve as stealth styling aids in a pinch.

Fake a Fresh Blowout
Finely milled, superabsorbent and readily available in most kitchens, plain-old flour makes an effective dry shampoo, says N.Y.C. hairstylist Mara Schiavetti, who works with actress Tilda Swinton. “Sprinkle it on roots, give it about ten seconds to sop up oil, then dust away residue with a makeup brush.”

A Sweet Fix
No hairspray? No problem. Dissolve 1 tsp of honey or agave nectar into a half cup of warm water, pour it into a spray bottle, then mist over hair, suggests Schiavetti. “It’s liquid sugar and acts like a light hair gel,” she explains. Another funky fixative: Sprite, says Los Angeles hairstylist Brett Freedman. The sugar gives strands texture.

Repair Fried Strands
Surprise! Dessert can be good for you. “Create a protein treatment by dissolving a packet of clear gelatin in hot water,” suggests N.Y.C. hairstylist Ted Gibson, who works with Anne Hathaway. Gelatin contains high levels of protein that can help strengthen the hair shaft. Massage the warm solution through your hair; leave it in for 30 minutes, then rinse.

Revive Red Hair
With stars like Christina Hendricks, Julianne Moore and Rihanna sporting it, red hair has never been hotter. The fiery shade can fade fast, making it a temperamental hue to maintain. “Red dyes have the largest color molecules and wash out quickly,” says colorist Kyle White. “Cranberry juice can make red hair look temporarily more vibrant if you need a quick boost.” Pour it onto hair and let it sit for five minutes, then rinse with water. Repeat and leave the juice on longer for a more dramatic effect.

Embrace Big Hair
The secret to voluminous hair may be in your laundry room. Hairstylist Eugene Toye of the Rita Hazan Salon in N.Y.C. applies spray starch to dry roots and then blow-dries them. “Starch builds up the texture and also adds hold so you get major lift,” he explains.
