Glam Slam: Boy Do I (Still) Love Boy George

How’s this for the ultimate #TBT? Here I am with someone from waayyyyyy back in the day — Boy George.

My South Carolina hometown friends and I LOVED Culture Club. Boy George, in particular.

This was before all the social media that permeates our society today, so we learned about most music from MTV. As you can imagine, we had never seen anything like Boy George or Culture Club! We loved his voice and the music… but the fashion, oh, the fashion!

(Redferns)

His flashy clothes, the hairstyles and, of course, the makeup. Oh yes, the makeup. His eyebrows were meticulously groomed. Friends dressed up like him for Halloween.

I got to meet Boy George when he stopped by Access Hollywood Live not too long ago. He was wearing a black suit, black shirt and accessorized with two safety pins, black sneaks and for a pop of color a bright red hat. These days he sports tattoos on his head… including a peace sign.

Naturally, his makeup was better than mine. He had long false lashes and soft metallic eye makeup. Pretty tame compared to the stuff of the ‘80s. Ever since his visit, I’ve been singing “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” for days now. It’s pretty awesome that all these years later, we are still listening to — and loving — his music.

“It’s wonderful to see the reaction of people to songs,” he told us on Access Hollywood Live. “It’s beautiful, I mean especially when you’re doing a live show and people sing. That’s one of the most beautiful things, when you hear a crowd carrying the tune, it’s almost like a religious experience… it’s just magical you know, it’s magical.”
