Glam Slam: ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’ Turns 50!

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is one of my all-time favorite movies. I love Audrey Hepburn. I love Tiffany & Co. I love the soundtrack. (“Moon River” was the first dance at my wedding). Of course, like every other fashion fan out there, I love the clothes, their influence can still be felt today, five decades later.

The movie is the epitome of timeless style. There’s one fashion classic after another. The Little Black Dress. The Ray Ban sunglasses. The trench. The statement necklace. All greatest hits. All etched in our memories thanks to the indelible grace and presence of Audrey Hepburn.

Hubert Givenchy designed the clothes, but Audrey Hepburn brought them to life. The movie and its star bring us inside social gal-about-town Holly Golightly’s New York world of parties, dates and yes, fabulous fashion. One of my favorite looks is the white goddess gown and chic updo Holly wears in the party scene. Simply divine!

The accessories in the film are also beyond chic. Even in scenes where Holly is more casual in a turtleneck sweater and trim slacks, her chain handled structured skin bag stands out, elevating her outfit from simple to sophisticated. Heck, Holly even looks fabulous when she wakes up after a long night, thanks to her glam eye mask and tassel earplugs!

Of course, the piece de resistance is the long black Givenchy dress, which has been named best film outfit of all time. Who hasn’t been inspired by that iconic little number?!

There’s not much I can write about the movie that hasn’t already been written in the last fifty years. There’s a reason “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is such an endearing and enduring film. It has style in spades, sure, but it’s so much more than that—it also has heart.
