Glam Slam: California Gurls

Last week I wrote about meeting up for dinner with some childhood friends (my Carolina Gurls!) when I was back in my South Carolina hometown and how they still dress pretty conservatively.

Well, flash forward to a brunch to celebrate my birthday with my group of friends here in Los Angeles (my California Gurls) and well, it’s like night and day. Whereas I was dressed the most “flashy” at my SC dinner wearing an oversized Loeffler Randall leopard print jacket… my outfit at my own birthday celebration was the dullest!

There’s Cara who shows up in her cute black satin blouse. Susan wears sequins to lunch! Jessica rocks high heels and a pretty Marc Jacobs dress. Sara, well, Sara… she shows up in full “Hollywood Glamour” mode in her big sunglasses and leopard jacket! As for me, I had on a metallic cardi and cargo pants. Snooze! How boring!

Seeing my glam So Cal crew, I was reminded of the more flashy and fun wardrobe I used to have. My social life revolved around nights out dressed in sparkles and high heels and cute clutch bags that only hold a phone, credit card and a lipstick. These days, I’m a lot more choosy about spending time away from my two-year-old daughter and husband and I rarely go out, which means I don’t really have those kinds of funky, party clothes anymore. Cargo pants seem to have become my mom-i-form! Sigh. (I guess that’s better than soccer mom jeans, right?)

So, it was fun to see what my far more hip friends are wearing… and doing. Some are single… most don’t have kids, so I get a big laugh hearing about all of their wild Hollywood and New York adventures! I love catching up with them. We drink champagne, eat good food and talk fashion, men… you know, all the usual topics.

As we get older and move into different phases in our lives, we also talk about kids, preschools, etc. Cara is a mom too and since I mostly see her at kids birthday parties these days, it was good to see her in a more “adult” setting.

My two groups of friends have vastly different lives, jobs, lifestyles and fashion senses. Of course, it’s not what you wear that matters, it’s who you are inside and I’m a lucky girl to have two distinctly different, but equally awesome sets of friends.
